New 2017 data published by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Ireland’s national pollutant and transfer register reveals a 69% decrease in emissions of harmful refrigerant gas in Ireland.

What is the national pollutant and transfer register?

The national pollutant and transfer register is a public register of pollutant releases and waste transfers from large industrial activities across Ireland. The register covers 91 pollutants from 417 large industrial facilities.

The EPA note that the positive response to phase out and the switch to more environmentally-friendly bulk refrigerant by Irish Industry is noted as one cause of this significant reduction.

2017 Recovery vs Disposal

Recovery – 11% increase in non-hazardous waste transferred from PRTR facilities for recovery.

Disposal – 12% decrease in non-hazardous waste being transferred from PRTR facilities for disposal.

EPA senior manager, Patrick Geoghegan, welcomed the increase in the recovery of hazardous waste by industry, but said the increase in the amount of such material being sent abroad for treatment is indicative of a lack of facilities here in Ireland.

  • A 47% (165,000 tonne) increase in the quantity of hazardous waste sent abroad for recovery
  • 5% increase in nitrogen dioxide releases to air.
  • A 17% increase in the recovery of hazardous waste within Ireland in 2017
  • 1% increase in sulphur dioxide released into the air.
  • 2% increase of carbon dioxide released from the 21 Pollutant Release and Transfer Register industrial facilities
  • 11% increase of Ammonia (NH3) released into the air from the intensive livestock production sector
  • 51% of nitrogen dioxide and 77% of sulphur dioxide releases were contributed by the energy sector
  • 34% of nitrogen dioxide and 18% of sulphur dioxide were contributed by the mineral industry
