Climate Change- Greenhouse Gas effects

Most scientists believe and most governments accept that global warming poses a threat to the world environment. Some argue that climate change is caused by natural phenomena and thus changes are inevitable.

Global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have increased markedly as a result of human activities since 1750 and now far exceed pre-industrial values determined from ice cores spanning many thousands of years. The global increases in carbon dioxide concentration are due primarily to fossil fuel use and land-use change, while those of methane and nitrous oxide are primarily due to agriculture.

Two issues which dominate current debate are the threats of climate change and the prospects of maintaining the security of energy supplies in the industrialised nations. Renewable energy is seen as offering a solution as it provides the opportunity of reducing exposure to external economic influences (security of supply), while at the same time limiting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and thus helping to mitigate the human-induced effects on climate change. Another tool in the fight against Climate Change is GHG management to reduce and avoid GHG emissions.

Climate change (regardless of scientific and political debate) is affecting organizations now on different fronts ~ legal, market, stakeholder. There continues to be high uncertainty about climate change policies/ programs/ protocols – existing and emerging.

There are many types of GHG protocols being developed, but there are concerns about compatibility, user-friendliness, cost, and credibility.

Many companies have concerns about following the right approach to account for GHG emissions.

As part of these solutions, the ISO 14064 Standard helps organizations to manage their GHG emissions better.

Organisations and individuals should be aware that GHG offsetting and, more generally, GHG management are new activities likely to open the door to a host of outcomes. Criticism abounds in this context; therefore, it is essential to rely on the best practices such as the ISO 14064 Standard and the GHG Protocol
